Medication Management With MICS

Monmouth Integrative Counseling Services provides medication management for adolescents, adults, and older adults across New Jersey through licensed psychiatric prescribers trained in psychotropic medication. Our team delivers care that is thoughtful, evidence-based, and shaped by each person’s needs, goals, and daily realities.

Our medication providers bring extensive experience across inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings, supporting individuals through crisis stabilization as well as long-term treatment planning. They work with a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, eating disorders, and mood disorders. Care is grounded in clinical expertise and shaped by a clear, collaborative approach that helps clients feel informed and supported at each step.

At Monmouth Integrative Counseling Services, medication management is never approached as a one-sided process. We take time to explain treatment options, encourage questions, and help clients understand how medication fits into their broader plan for emotional health. Treatment focuses on personal strengths and the unique circumstances that shape someone’s life, rather than defining them by a diagnosis.

Along with psychopharmacology, our team incorporates lifestyle-based strategies that can reinforce stability and emotional balance. This may include guidance around sleep, structure, movement, and nutrition—elements that often influence day-to-day well-being.

Medication management is available to clients throughout New Jersey by secure virtual sessions and in-person appointments at our Manasquan and Brick offices. Our goal is to provide consistent, accessible support that helps people feel better, function with more ease, and move forward with clarity and confidence.

Who Provides Your Medication Care

Medication care at MICS comes from advanced practice nurses, including psychiatric nurse practitioners, also called psychiatric APNs. They have graduate training in mental health. In New Jersey, they can evaluate symptoms, diagnose conditions, and prescribe psychiatric medication. They also work in collaboration with physicians, as state law requires.

You can learn more about our prescribers and therapists in our therapist directory.

Because prescribers and therapists work in the same practice, your care stays connected. With your consent, they can share goals and updates as your plan changes. We also offer medication-assisted treatment for alcohol and opioid use at our Shrewsbury office.

Understanding Medication Management

For some patients, proper medication management is an essential component in the treatment of mental health disorders. It involves a strategic approach to the use of prescriptions and medications, ensuring that each client receives the most effective and safe treatment tailored to their unique needs. Our services focus not only on prescribing medications but also on the continuous assessment and adjustment of treatment plans to optimize results. For some clients, GeneSight genetic testing can give your prescriber added information when choosing a medication.

Common Questions About Medication Management

Is a psychiatric nurse practitioner the same as a psychiatrist?

No, though the care can look similar. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. A psychiatric nurse practitioner is an advanced practice nurse trained in mental health. Both can evaluate symptoms, prescribe medication, and adjust treatment over time.

Can my therapist prescribe medication?

Not in New Jersey. Licensed counselors, social workers, and associate counselors do not prescribe medication. Instead, your therapist can refer you to one of our prescribers. Then the two can work together on your plan.

Do I need to see a therapist at MICS too?

Many clients pair medication with therapy, since the two often work well together. Call our front office to talk through the setup that fits you best.

Can I have medication appointments by telehealth?

Yes. Medication appointments are available by video as well as in person. Learn more on our telehealth therapy page.

Will insurance cover medication management?

Many plans do, and we accept NJ Medicaid for eligible services. See our rates and insurance page for the full list of plans.
