Understanding Holiday-Related Grief and Feelings of Loss
The holiday season, often filled with gatherings and celebrations, can be especially challenging for those grieving the loss of a loved one. Studies show that grief can intensify during this time as people confront traditions, memories, and loved ones’ absence. According to a survey by the American Psychological Association (APA), 38% of people say their stress levels increase during the holiday season, and for those experiencing grief, these feelings can be particularly pronounced. This heightened grief can lead to feelings of isolation and sadness, making it harder to cope.
The National Alliance for Grieving Children reports that one in 14 children will lose a parent or sibling before age 18, and for adults, an estimated 37% have lost a close family member or friend in the past 3 years. Facing the holidays without loved ones can bring up a renewed sense of loss, and many may feel pressure to “put on a happy face” or maintain traditions, which can add to the emotional burden.
Grief is a deeply personal experience, and while some people find comfort in familiar traditions, others may find them painful reminders. At Monmouth Integrative Counseling Services, we understand that everyone’s journey through grief is unique, and our team of licensed professionals is here to help you find what works best for you.
