Medication can be an important part of treating many mental health conditions. However, finding the right medication is not always straightforward. Many people experience a frustrating trial-and-error process before discovering a medication that works well for them. At Monmouth Integrative Counseling Services, we are committed to improving the way medication management is delivered by incorporating tools that support more personalized care.
Request a Consultation >One of those tools is GeneSight®, a pharmacogenomic test that helps clinicians better understand how an individual’s genetic makeup may influence their response to certain psychiatric medications. MICS is now offering GeneSight testing as part of our medication management services to help guide treatment decisions and support more individualized care.
What Is GeneSight?
GeneSight is a pharmacogenomic test, which means it examines how your genes may affect the way your body metabolizes and responds to medications. The test focuses on medications commonly prescribed for mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, ADHD, and other psychiatric disorders.
Everyone’s genetic profile is slightly different. These genetic differences can influence how quickly your body breaks down medications, how effectively a medication works, and the likelihood of experiencing certain side effects. By analyzing these genetic factors, GeneSight provides information that can help clinicians make more informed medication decisions.
It is important to note that GeneSight is not a diagnostic test and does not replace clinical judgment. Instead, it provides additional information that providers can use alongside a full clinical evaluation when developing a treatment plan.
How the GeneSight Test Works
The GeneSight test is simple, quick, and non-invasive. The process typically involves a small cheek swab that collects a sample of DNA. This sample is then sent to a laboratory where specialists analyze specific genes known to influence medication metabolism and response.
The test evaluates genetic variations in multiple genes that affect how the body processes medications and how the brain responds to them. Some genes affect drug metabolism, while others influence how medications interact with brain receptors and neurotransmitters.
Once the analysis is complete, a report is sent to the clinician. This report organizes many commonly prescribed psychiatric medications into categories based on how a patient’s genetics may impact them.
The report evaluates more than 60 medications used to treat mental health conditions, helping clinicians identify options that may be more compatible with a patient’s genetic profile.
Who Might Benefit From GeneSight Testing?
GeneSight testing can be helpful for individuals who:
While the test does not guarantee which medication will work best, it can provide valuable insights that help clinicians narrow down options and make more informed treatment decisions.
GeneSight and Personalized Mental Health Care
Mental health treatment is most effective when it is tailored to the individual. Genetics are only one piece of the puzzle, but they can offer meaningful insights into how the body processes medications. Pharmacogenomic testing like GeneSight helps bring mental health care closer to the goal of precision medicine, where treatment decisions are informed by the unique biological profile of each person.
At MICS, we believe that combining clinical expertise with emerging medical tools can improve outcomes and reduce the frustration many people experience when starting psychiatric medications.
