What Is GeneSight?

Everyone’s genetic profile is slightly different. By analyzing these genetic factors, GeneSight provides information that can help clinicians make more informed medication decisions.
It is important to note that GeneSight is not a diagnostic test and does not replace clinical judgment. Instead, it provides additional information that providers can use alongside a full clinical evaluation when developing a treatment plan.
How the GeneSight Test Works
The GeneSight test is simple, quick, and non-invasive. The process typically involves a small cheek swab that collects a sample of DNA. This sample is then sent to a laboratory where specialists analyze specific genes known to influence medication metabolism and response.
The test evaluates genetic variations in multiple genes that affect how the body processes medications and how the brain responds to them. Some genes affect drug metabolism, while others influence how medications interact with brain receptors and neurotransmitters.
Once the analysis is complete, a report is sent to the clinician. This report organizes many commonly prescribed psychiatric medications into categories based on how a patient’s genetics may impact them.
