Medication-Assisted Treatment in Shrewsbury, NJ

Recovery takes real effort, and willpower alone is rarely enough. Medication-assisted treatment, often called MAT, pairs FDA-approved medications with ongoing support. At Monmouth Integrative Counseling Services, we offer personalized MAT for adults at our Shrewsbury office in Tinton Falls. The aim is to ease cravings, lower the risk of relapse, and help you steady your daily life.

What Is Medication-Assisted Treatment?

MAT uses FDA-approved medications to treat alcohol use disorder and opioid use disorder. These medications act on the brain’s response to alcohol or opioids. As a result, many people find cravings and withdrawal easier to manage.

Medication is one part of care, though. It works best with regular check-ins and support for the rest of your life. That is why MAT at MICS sits inside a practice built around mental health care.

Who MAT Can Help

Our MAT program is for adults 18 and older. We provide personalized treatment for people experiencing:

  • Alcohol use disorder
  • Opioid use disorder
  • Cravings and relapse prevention
  • Ongoing recovery support

You may be just starting recovery, or you may have years behind you. In both cases, your plan is built around where you are now.

Signs It May Be Time to Ask About MAT

Many adults wait a long time before asking for help. It may be worth a call if you notice:

  • Cravings that keep pulling you back, even when you want to stop
  • Past attempts to quit that ended in relapse
  • Withdrawal symptoms that make stopping feel out of reach
  • Drinking or opioid use affecting your work, health, or family
  • A need for support that fits around your job and home life

If any of these sound familiar, a conversation with our team is a reasonable next step. There is no pressure to commit on the first call.

Treatment Options

Your prescriber will talk with you about which option fits your health, history, and goals. Treatment options may include:

Suboxone® (buprenorphine/naloxone)

Suboxone is used to treat opioid use disorder. It reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms. Over time, it can support long-term recovery.

Naltrexone

Naltrexone is a non-opioid medication. It may help reduce alcohol cravings. It also blocks the effects of opioids.

Vivitrol®

Vivitrol is a once-monthly injectable form of naltrexone. It may be used for alcohol or opioid use disorder when clinically appropriate. Some medications, including Vivitrol, require specific steps before the first dose. Your prescriber will explain how to start safely.

How MAT Works at MICS

Care starts with a conversation. At your first visit, your prescriber reviews your health history, substance use, and goals. Together, you agree on a plan that feels realistic.

From there, you will have regular follow-up visits. Your prescriber checks how the medication is working and adjusts the plan as needed. Our prescribers are advanced practice nurses who also provide medication management for mental health concerns.

Treatment may take place in the comfort of your home, at our office, or at Oakhurst Pharmacy. Where you receive care depends on your individual needs and clinical plan.

Our Partnership With Oakhurst Pharmacy

We are proud to partner with Oakhurst Pharmacy to make treatment more accessible. The partnership makes it easier to receive medication, including injectable options. Appointments, however, are always made through MICS. Call our office first, and we will guide you through each step.

Our Shrewsbury Office

MAT appointments take place at our Shrewsbury location, 2 Hartford Drive, Suite 201, in Tinton Falls. The office is convenient for adults in Red Bank, Eatontown, Long Branch, Ocean Township, and nearby towns.

Medication and Counseling Together

Many people find that medication works better alongside counseling. A therapist can help you understand triggers, rebuild routines, and repair relationships. At MICS, therapy and medication care happen within the same practice. Ask about individual therapy when you call, or browse our therapist directory.

Insurance and Cost

Our MAT providers accept NJ Medicaid. Many private insurance plans may also cover MAT. See our rates and insurance page for the plans we work with, or call us to check your coverage.

Common Questions About MAT

Is MAT just trading one drug for another?

No. MAT medications are prescribed and monitored by a licensed provider. At a prescribed dose, buprenorphine reduces cravings without the high of other opioids. Naltrexone and Vivitrol are not opioids at all.

Is MAT offered at other MICS offices?

Right now, MAT is available at our Shrewsbury office only. Our Manasquan, Brick, and Brielle offices offer therapy and other services.

How long does treatment last?

There is no set timeline. Your prescriber reviews your progress with you and adjusts the plan over time. Some people change medications or doses as their needs shift.

Can a family member call for a loved one?

Yes. Family members are welcome to call with questions about MAT. Treatment decisions, however, are made with the adult seeking care.

Is my treatment private?

Yes. Your care at MICS is confidential.

What if I or someone I love is in crisis?

If someone has overdosed or is in danger, call 911. For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988. The SAMHSA National Helpline, 1-800-662-4357, is free and open 24/7.
