April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. It is a time to acknowledge survivors, raise awareness, and take meaningful action. At Monmouth Integrative Counseling Services, our team is proud to stand with survivors across New Jersey.
On April 7, our staff participated in the Day of Action. We wore teal in solidarity with survivors everywhere. The teal ribbon is a symbol of support, hope, and the fight to end sexual violence.
A Public Health Issue That Touches Every Community
Sexual assault is far more common than many people realize. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center, 81% of women and 43% of men report experiencing sexual harassment or assault in their lifetime.
Yet most incidents go unreported. Only about 25% of rapes and sexual assaults were reported to police in 2018. Fear, shame, and social stigma keep many survivors silent for years.
False reporting is also widely overstated. Research shows it accounts for only 2% to 10% of cases. Believing survivors is one of the most important things a community can do.
Here in the Jersey Shore and surrounding areas, these statistics are not just numbers. They represent our neighbors, friends, and family members.
The Emotional Impact of Sexual Assault
The aftermath of sexual assault can be deeply painful. Survivors often carry trauma long after the event has passed. Many experience anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress, and difficulty trusting others.
Additionally, the isolation that comes with staying silent can deepen that pain. Without support, healing becomes much harder to reach.
Healing is possible, though. With the right therapeutic support, survivors can process their experiences and rebuild a sense of safety. At MICS, we offer trauma therapy and PTSD treatment rooted in evidence-based approaches like EMDR.
What Is EMDR and How Does It Help Survivors?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It is a specialized therapy proven effective for trauma processing. Many survivors find it helps reduce the emotional intensity tied to traumatic memories.
Our licensed therapists in Manasquan, Brick, Shrewsbury and throughout NJ via Telehealth are trained in EMDR. We also offer individual therapy for anxiety, depression, and stress related to trauma. Every treatment plan is built around the individual needs of each client.
Speaking Up in Our Community
Sexual Assault Awareness Month is not only about reflection. It is also about action. Our team encourages everyone to get involved.
Here are a few ways to show support locally:
- Believe survivors when they come forward
- Speak out against victim-blaming in your community
- Donate to local rape and sexual assault resource centers
- Share awareness information on social media
Small actions create real change. Together, communities shift the culture around sexual violence.
